Steampunk, before it became the full-blown sub-culture it is today, started out as a science-fiction sub-genre in the 1970's. Its inspirations go all the way back to 19th century Victorian writers, such as Jules Verne (author of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) and H.G. Wells (author of The Time Machine).
Steampunk fashion, at its heart, is based on the Victorian style aesthetic, but embellished and influenced by science fiction. Costumes are traditionally handmade or bought from a thrift store and customised, Steampunk women often (but not always) wear dresses complete with petticoats, corsets, and some sort of head wear, often a small, feminine top hat or a floral pin or goggles.
A pocket watch is a common accessory for Steampunk's of either gender. In a world where wristwatches do not exist, time can be kept fashionably in the pocket of a waistcoat. To finish any outfit get a pair of shoes printed with your favourite steampunk images available here
